Silent Vigil: Stand Against the Death Penalty
February 3, 2017 @ 7:30 am - 8:15 am
February 3, 2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the last execution in Australia, that of Ronald Ryan. On that morning, opponents of the death penalty, Reprieve Australia, and friends are invited to stand in silence outside the former Pentridge Prison in Coburg.
We will in silence remember: the prisoners on death row around the world now; the hard work of those who fought the death penalty here; the executed and their victims and all their families; and show opposition to the death penalty worldwide. SSDP Australia is a strong supporter of the abolishment of the death penalty worldwide, in particular with the amount of people on death row for drug related charges.
On the morning of the execution in 1967, thousands stood in not so silent protest at the time. Reprieve Australia thanks Peter Norden, former Pentridge Prison Chaplain, for organising the event, and looks forward to seeing members of the public there.
